New Rumored Project: “Whales”

Here’s information on another rumored project for John, starring alongside Drew Barrymore. [Source]

Universal Greenlights Whale Tale With John Krasinski And Drew Barrymore

Universal Pictures has given the green light to Whales, setting John Krasinski to join Drew Barrymore in the Ken Kwapis-directed fact-based film about the 1988 rescue of a trio of California gray whales that got trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle.

Krasinski will play a small town newspaper reporter who breaks the story. Barrymore plays a Greenpeace activist, and they turn the potential tragedy into an international story. The incident created a temporary Cold War thaw as President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev found a common cause. They interceded to save the whales. The film is produced by Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Michael Sugar and Working Title’s Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin.

Universal toppers Adam Fogelson and Donna Langley are scrutinizing films carefully, and this one got the thumbs up for its family appeal. I’ve heard production is planned for the fall, but that’s dependent on when Krasinski is free from The Office. Krasinski is currently in New York, shooting the Luke Greenfield-directed romantic comedy Something Borrowed alongside Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin. Kwapis has directed Krasinski in a dozen episodes of The Office, and also directed the forgettable License to Wed.

New Rumored Project: “Something Borrowed”

Here’s information on another rumored project for John. It would be a supporting role in a romantic comedy starring Ginnifer Goodwin. [Source]

John Krasinski is in negotiations to join Ginnifer Goodwin in Alcon’s romantic comedy “Something Borrowed.”

The script centers on a Manhattan attorney (Goodwin), the consummate good girl, who falls in love with her best friend’s fiance on her 30th birthday.

The project is based on a series of novels by Emily Giffin. Alcon also picked up rights to the second book, “Something Blue,” with a plan to develop a sequel.

Krasinski’s deal is rare in that it is a two-picture deal for a role — he will play Goodwin’s friend and confidant — more supporting in nature in the first movie but which evolves into the male lead in the second one.

Luke Greenfield is directing the first pic, now eyeing a spring start.

Alcon heads Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are producing with 2S principals Hilary Swank and Molly Smith. Aaron Lubin and Pamela Schein Murphy of Wild Ocean Films also are producing.

The CAA-repped Krasinski, best known for his work on NBC’s “The Office,” is slowly building a career in features through key roles. He gained favorable notices for his performance opposite Meryl Streep in “It’s Complicated” and recently tested for the lead in “Captain America.”

Conflicting Captain America News

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

According to FOX, it’s very likely that John will land the role of Captain America.

John Krasinski is getting even closer to nabbing the role that could propel him into action hero stardom … Captain America!

Insiders at the Marvel compound tell Fox 411 that he is close to landing the superhero gig of his life. John, who plays Jim on “The Office,” has appeared in front of producers repeatedly since the start of the new year and since rumors began in February.

“John has read 4 times and is doing screen tests,” our source tells us. “He has screen tested 2 times so far. It’s very likely that he will be the new Captain America. He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week.

At this point, Krasinski is the main focus at Marvel.

“The big bosses are having him read with multiple actresses up for the female leads. They want to lock down the role and then they will narrow down everyone else.”

Unfortunately, “The Office” star is not the chosen one for many comic fans who work for Marvel.

“It’s a surprise and we are bracing ourselves for ‘that guy from ‘The Office” to land Captain America. They are not really looking at the other guys, so it’s time to get ready to work with him.”

“If John gets offered the role, the pay will not be outrageous but it would be a multi-film deal. Marvel has big plans to tie the movies together and John would have parts in all of them since the first Captain America will be an origin story. The movie will break down how Steve Rogers becomes Captain America. ”

“The First Avenger: Captain America” is slated to be released by Paramount on July 22, 2011.

While THR reports that John, along with the other contenders previously mentioned, has been dropped from consideration as the hunt for Captain American continues.

The answer of whom will hold Captain America’s shield and play alter ego Steve Rogers is still in Marvel’s hands, but the list of actors is being whittled down.

Wilson Bethel, who starred in HBO’s “Generation Kill” and currently appear ing in “The Young and the Restless,” is still in the running as is Mike Vogel, who appeared in “Cloverfield” and CBS’ “Miami Medical.”

Meanwhile, Chris Evans, currently shooting “Safety Point” in Texas, has read for the part and has a test offer which may come to fruition next week. Garrett Hedlund has not tested yet though Marvel is very keen on him.

Actors previously reported as testing including John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Chace Crawford, among others, are no longer on the list.

The part calls for a nine-picture deal, the second of which would be the “Avengers” movie. That project could start shooting as soon as January 2011.

Taking a shot on relative unknowns such as Bethel and Vogel is not out of the realm of possibility as many tentpoles and franchises are handing out the keys to up-and-comers. Paramount and J.J. Abrams took a chance on Chris Pine to play Capt. Kirk while James Cameron put his trust in Sam Worthington.

John Krasinski: Superhero?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Rumors are that John’s in the running for the role of Captain American in the new Marvel movie due out in 2011.

John Krasinski as Captain America?

It could happen as Marvel conducts screen tests this week in its search for the actor to play Steve Rogers, the alter ego of the title character in its “Captain America” movie.

The company’s latest superhero movie is being directed by Joe Johnston and tells the story of the young infirm man rejected from enlisting who becomes America’s symbol of liberty during World War II and eventually a member of Marvel’s superhero team the Avengers.

About seven actors have moved to the front of the super soldier serum testing line and have either tested or are expected to screen test this week and next at Marvel’s Manhattan Beach headquarters.

Those known to be on the list with Krasinski include Michael Cassidy (who appeared in”Smallvile” and who tested for the Superman movie when McG was going to direct it), Patrick Flueger (one of the stars of “The 4400″ who most recently appeared in the Tobey Maguire movie “Brothers”), Scott Porter (TV’s “Friday Night Lights”), Wilson Bethel (“Generation Kill”) and Mike Vogel (“Cloverfield”).

Sources on both sides caution that an actor may not be found from the tests, which happened during Marvel’s search for the man who would be “Thor.” For that movie, currently shooting in Manhattan Beach, the studio conducted several rounds of testing but found its star, Chris Hemsworth, late in the game, after initially passing on his audition reel.

While Marvel is looking for someone on the youngish side and who can play rugged, one key ingredient emerging is that the actor be American, according to insiders. So far, no British or Australian actors have been seriously considered though the search could widen if no suitable candidates are found.
